Fall HVAC Maintenance Checklist
Fall has arrived and it's the perfect time to get your home ready for the cold winter months. Your air conditioner worked hard for you all summer to keep you cool, but now it's time to switch over to heat. It's important to check your furnace or other heating system in the fall to make sure it will make it through the winter. There are some simple steps you can perform yourself to get your furnace into winter shape, but there are also some things that should be handled by a certified HVAC professional, like those at Van Natta Mechanical.
The first thing you should do to get your furnace ready for the winter is an overall cleaning and clearing job. Most of this step can be handled on your own. Never leave items on or near your furnace. Your first step should be to clear any household items or debris on or around your furnace. If you have a heat pump, or other outdoor unit, clear leaves and other debris that may have accumulated on or around the unit through the summer or fall. Sticks and leaves can create an obstruction that may reduce the efficiency of your system and could even pose a fire hazard.
Replace Your Air Filters
If your heating system runs through ducts that have air filters, it's important that these filters are replaced at the beginning of the heating season and throughout the winter. At the very least, filters should be replaced in the spring and fall, but ideally should be replaced even more often than that. Your ducts have probably collected dirt and dust over the summer and fall that may negatively impact the airflow of your heating system in the winter. A system that is not running at peak efficiency may result in cold spots throughout your home and an increase in your energy bill. Since your system will be forced to work harder to compensate, slacking on air filter replacement can also drastically reduce the lifespan of your furnace or other heating system.
Check Your Insulation
Even if your heating system is operating properly and at peak efficiency, poor insulation can still allow heat to escape from your home. One of the simplest checkups you can do on your home is to test whether it is properly insulated. First, close all doors and windows and shut off fans. Once this is done, you can wet your hand and test for drafts around your home. If you do have drafts, you may lose heat throughout the winter. In addition to being heating system experts, the professionals at Van Natta Mechanical also specialize in insulation installation. This is an important process that's best handled by the professionals to ensure it is installed correctly.
